The following is part of our Member Spotlight series. Twice a month, the PPRA blog will feature a profile on one of our members. Today’s post highlights PPRA newcomer Esme Artz.
Since September 2013.
How did you get into PR?
I studied English in college and wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with it. I was introduced to PR through my first internship and it felt very natural. I always enjoyed writing and found that I loved telling a company’s story. I had several more internship experiences before I landed my first PR job at Brainerd Communicators in NYC.
Tell us a little bit about your current position.
As Public Information Coordinator at WHYY, Philadelphia’s largest public media provider, I develop and enhance awareness of WHYY’s programs, services and initiatives.
What is your favorite aspect of your current job?
I truly believe in the importance of public media. Stations like WHYY keep people connected to the world through educational and enriching programs and services. I especially enjoy when a media contact reveals a similar appreciation for public media.
Are there any PR trends that you’re really into right now?
I’m loving how almost all reporters have their own Twitter handle now. It’s like having immediate access! I’m exploring ways to engage in real-time conversations with reporters on this platform that ultimately lead to coverage.
What social media platform do you use the most in your personal life? What about for business purposes?
If you could give one piece of advice to current PR students about getting into the industry, what would it be?
Don’t give up! I graduated college when the economy crashed in 2008. No one was hiring (especially new grads) and it seemed almost impossible to get a job in the industry. That’s when I thought to myself, “I’ll just work for free until somebody pays me.” It was hard work, juggling unpaid internships and part-time jobs, but it paid off. If you are passionate and driven, nothing can stop you.
What is your favorite thing about Philly?
I love Philadelphia’s restaurant scene!
