Today we’re featuring Nina Scimenes, Public Relations & Marketing Manager at Brûlée Catering. Nina has been a PPRA member for almost 10 years, and is our Vice President of Programs. Sign up for the next PPRA program to meet her in person!
PPRA: Nina, tell us a bit about your background and your current job.
NS: I grew up in Randolph, NJ and have been in the Philadelphia region since graduating from Cabrini College in Radnor, PA with an English/Communications degree. My background in the hospitality marketing industry in Philadelphia includes past experience at Crowne Plaza Hotel Center City and AMResorts of Apple Vacation. In my current role at Brûlée Catering, I manage media relations, social media, email communications, and marketing initiatives. The company has earned exclusive catering status at over fifteen venues including Please Touch Museum, Independence Visitor Center and Philadelphia History Museum just to name a few.
PPRA: What projects are you working on right now?
NS: The newest exclusive venue client at Brûlée is the Museum of the American Revolution. It opens Spring 2017 at the corner of 3rd and Chestnut and is bringing Philly its newest tourist attraction and stunning event space to host events. The official announcement was exclusive with Philadelphia Business Journal, and I’m working on pitching it to more publications. PPRA: What is your favorite part about your job?
NS: I love interacting with people involved in events and meetings. The hospitality industry revolves around people and making them feel comfortable. Oh, and sampling our chefs’ delicious menus is a great perk!
PPRA: What was your latest and greatest accomplishment at your job?
NS: My role is similar to an agency position since I work on several campaigns and projects simultaneously for multiple clients. Recently I facilitated a KYW interview that spotlighted Legacy Youth and Tennis, which is one of our exclusive venues in East Falls. There are several community partners that I’m proud to work with and this is one of them. Legacy is making a difference in children’s lives through tennis, and the courts are transformed into a unique event space.
PPRA: What one piece of advice would you give to your fellow PR pros?
NS: Be genuine when networking! You never know when you may need to connect in the future on projects, and making friends in business is important.
PPRA: What book or movie could you read or watch again and again?
NS: Forrest Gump is my favorite movie that never gets old! I also recently saw the movie Burnt starring Bradley Cooper and can’t wait to see it again. It portrays the passion that chefs have. It’s difficult to put into words what I have witnessed many talented chefs do and this movie illustrate it.
PPRA: What’s your favorite spot in Philly?
NS: Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens on South Street is my happy place! It is a reminder that beautiful things can be created from broken pieces. Separately the tiles and mirrors in Isiah Zagar’s mosaics murals are lost but together they have a purpose.
