Upgrade Your Instagram

Last week, Instagram shared several tips to help brands maximize the popular social media platform’s potential. The post on the company’s Tumblr page features several brands that Instagram sees as exemplarily users. Keep these helpful hints in mind the next time you take to your company’s Instagram account:

  1. Be true to your brand. Your photos should reflect a clear personality. You can try to work in current trends, but always stay true to your brand’s voice.
  2. Share experiences. Give your followers a look at what your brand makes possible.
  3. Find beauty everywhere. Beauty can be found in the most unlikely of places – take it from General Electric, one of the company’s featured in Instagram’s post. Take what your brand does and find a way to make it meaningful to your followers.
  4. Inspire action. Develop a hashtag and ask your followers to get involved.
  5. Know your audience. Once you know what people like about your brand, you can develop new content based on those characteristics.

Best Practices For Pinning

In today’s ever-evolving world of social media, there are more platforms available to PR pros and community managers than we know what to do with. With so many options at our finger tips, it can be difficult to choose which platforms to include and even more challenging to use those outlets correctly.

Although Pinterest has been incorporated into the social media plans of numerous brands, it is still being underutilized and misused by many. Ragan’s PR Daily recently shared a few tips that will help you make the most of your presence on Pinterest.

  • Add pins to relevant categories. This will help users discover your content when they are searching for pins. Users may not be looking for your client’s hotel, but if you add the correct categories, you increase the chances that they will stumble upon your pin while doing a search for travel-related pins.
  • Write detailed pin descriptions. Descriptions will add context and clarity, thus making your pin more than just an interesting image.
  • Choose images that are high quality and vertically oriented. Images that are vertical stand out more on the Pinterest dashboard than those that are horizontal.
  • Make sure your pins link to the correct place. If your pin doesn’t link back to the right place, you aren’t doing yourself any favors. It will also frustrate your users. There is nothing worse than clicking on a pin and finding there is nothing there!
  • Set goals for consistent pinning. Pinterest is just like any other social media platform, you have to create a schedule and dedicate time to developing your content.
  • Post your pins over time to reach more users. The dashboard on Pinterest is one continuous stream of images. If you post all of your pins at once, it is likely that you will miss out on many users because they don’t keep scrolling down on their dashboard. By spreading the posts out, you increase your chances of being seen.
  • Repin. Repin. Repin. Based on the tip above, it is important to repin your own content (aka post the same thing more than once) so that you can expose your pins to more users. You should also repin in order to make your page more relevant to your users. Let’s face it, followers aren’t only interested in your brand, items, etc. If you share other relevant content, your page becomes a true resource…not just a form of advertisement. Finally, every time you repin someone else’s content, you are bringing your own page to that person’s attention. That means each repin has the potential of gaining you another follower or even having your content repinned in return.
